![]() ![]() “Although photo-based images appeared in newspapers and journals in the mid-nineteenth century and reportage was already a recognized practice, the word “photojournalist” does not seem to have been used until 1938 – in reference to German photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, whose keen images of the rise of Nazism were as powerful as words. He made a name for himself within the Berlin journalistic scene, especially with his prescient shots of the rise of fascism. During this time, Alfred started working as a freelance photographer for what eventually became the Associated Press. Following the war, he searched for any job he could find, working as a belt and button salesman in Weimar, Germany. At the First World War outbreak, the young Alfred was recruited into the German Army, where he was wounded in 1918. ![]() ![]() Eisenstaedt was given his first camera at 11, an Eastman Kodak Folding Camera, beginning a lifelong journey into a world behind the lens. Beginning a Lifelong Journey into a World Behind the LensĪlfred Eisenstaedt was born to a Jewish family in 1898 in what is today considered Poland, and early in his life, his family moved to Berlin. His photographs became iconographic in their social, political, and historical content. At LIFE, Eisenstaedt developed a legendary portfolio, taking over 2,500 pictures and over 90 cover photos creating some of the world’s most memorable images still in circulation today. Foreseeing the political chaos in Europe, he moved to New York, where he began to work for LIFE magazine. Known for his skill and velocity with the small 35mm camera, unlike photographers of his time who used bulky cameras and flash equipment, Eisenstaedt pioneered the style of street photography and the use of natural lighting. These included Hitler and Mussolini’s meeting at the League of Nations, a photographic report on Thomas Mann’s Noble Prize, and many portraits of famous personalities, including Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, and George Bernard Shaw. Yet, Alfred Eisenstaedt stood out years prior as a “photographer extraordinaire” by capturing striking, unforgettable pictures. By the end of the 1940s, the most distinguished photojournalists belonged to the influential agency Magnum Photos which covered many historical events. In the early 20th century, photojournalism was a nascent endeavor, as images became as important as the words evidenced by Henry Luce’s LIFE magazine. As one of LIFE magazine’s most renowned photojournalists, Eisenstaedt’s journey to becoming one of the most versatile and well-regarded photographers was an improbable one. He died at Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard.Alfred Eisenstaedt is often credited as the first “photojournalist” in the medium’s history. He was so closely linked to it that Leica presented him with a unique model in crhome bearing serial number M3-1000001 in recognition of his contributions both to his profession and to the popularity of the 35mm format. In 1936 he became one of the original four staff photographers for the new Life magazine over the span of his career, he contributed 90 cover photos and approximately 2,500 photo essays to that publication.Įisenstaedt was a devotee of the Leica 35mm camera, introduced commercially in 1925. His early work was heavily influenced by the pioneering documentary photographer Erich Salomon and during his years in Germany he was present for many historically important events.Įisenstaedt emigrated to the United States in 1935 in consequence of rising anti-semitism in Germany. ![]() An ardent amateur photographer, he became a professional in 1929 and was hired by the German office of the Associated Press. He becomes human so he can be with the one he loves. In the movie, Cage’s character is an immortal angel but throws away his immortality for love. The song’s meaning directly correlates to the plot of the movie, City of Angels. In LA Weekly magazine, seeing that Iris DeMent was playing in town, he liked the name and chose it as the title. It was like a gift – like: ‘Oh, thanks God!’” I’d broken two strings on my guitar, so I’d started winding all the strings up and down in these weird configurations, and that song just came out. “Most of the time, for me, writing involves procrastination, fear, doubt, criticism… Most songs I write I have to torture myself be a prima donna for about an hour,” said Rzeznik. He agreed to work on it because prominent artists like U2 and Peter Gabriel were also on the soundtrack.Īfter an early screening of the movie, Rzeznik returned to his hotel room to work on the song that would later become “Iris.” He was asked to write a song for the 1998 romantic movie City of Angels with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. The beautiful love song “Iris” came at the exact moment that Rzeznik needed. Luckily, an opportunity to dig Rzeznik out of his hole came. I was looking for something to hold on to.” So it was a really manic time in my life. I’d moved from my home in Buffalo, New York, and was living in this hotel. “My wife and I had just broken up, and I’d met another girl who I was really into. The Goo Goo Dolls frontman told Louder Sound in a 2019 interview that in 1997, “I was feeling kinda schizophrenic,” Rzeznik recalls. He felt lost, not only in his musical life but in his personal life, as well. With the pressures of stardom, Rzeznik felt like he couldn’t produce another hit. I think it was the period where I finally had to come to terms with the fact that songwriting was now my job.” Rzeznik continued, “I felt like I had just won the lottery and everyone was standing around going, ‘Wow! You won the Lottery! That’s amazing! Do it again!’ So it really kind of froze me up. He struggled with his identity as they “made five albums, and then all of the sudden we had this hit song, “Name.” I got this feeling I think a lot of artists get: that I am a complete phony, that was just luck, and I don’t know how to do it again.” Rzeznik told American Songwriter in a 2010 interview that he was going through a great deal of writer’s block. The song’s meaning largely has to do with Rzeznik’s journey to writing the track. Let’s dive into the meaning of The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.” Leading up to “Iris” If “Iris” wasn’t written for the album, what was it written for? What’s the story behind one of the greatest love songs of all time? We are here to answer those questions. ![]() ![]() If traffic spikes around the same time each year for a keyword, then it’s a trend. So how can we support the livelihoods of at-risk communities and ensure our devices are produced ethically and sustainably? This suggests roughly 15,000 - 30,000 metric tons of cobalt comes from artisanal mines that may be violating human rights. In 2019, DRC produced 100,000 metric tons of cobalt ( Statista). Children end up working at mines for a number of reasons: accompanying guardians no separation between working and living sites and providing income for their families. Children’s work varies from washing mineral rocks to heavy work underground. It is very difficult to obtain accurate numbers on child labourers, but in 2018, Harvard adjunct lecturer Siddharth Kara reported 35,000 child labourers at 31 artisanal mining sites in the DRC (World Economic Forum, 2020). According to the WEF, more than 2 million Congolese depend on artisanal mines for their livelihood and each miner supports up to five times as many people. How much do cobalt miners get paid? In a 2016 article by the Washington Post, miners made an average of US$2-$3 a day depending on how much cobalt they found. Miners wear plastic lamps strapped to their heads and no protective gear, placing them at increased risk for lung disease and other toxicity-related illness. Artisanal mines are usually worked by independent miners who use their own tools to extract cobalt from hand-dug, underground tunnels. ![]() According to the World Economic Forum, cobalt from artisanal and small-scale mines makes up approximately 15-30% of national Congolese cobalt production. ![]() |
